Steentilstraat
Urban Apartments with Character

Located on the east side of Groningen's city center, Steentilstraat boasts a diverse mix of buildings from various architectural periods and styles. To add to this already lively and eclectic street, the team at De Zwarte Hond designed a unique addition: a two-part apartment complex catering to urban starters.
The street-facing side of the building features a stepped design that seamlessly integrates with the height of the adjacent buildings.
Historical Integration
The project spans two historical plots, and preserving the historical integrity of the area was a key consideration in the design. The building is split into two distinct halves, yet they share a common aesthetic through the use of similar materials and detailing.
Lively variations
The building's shifting heights, specifically placed setbacks, and roof forms create a harmonious connection with the surrounding buildings. Subtle differences in brick sorting and detailing further enhance this distinction. Details in natural stone give the building a durable and timeless character that fits into the context without attempting to replicate historical styles. On the ground floor, a butcher and pastry shop will add to the lively mix of shops on Steentilstraat.
