Smart Circular Expansion of Oosterpoort Concert Hall
We were commissioned by SPOT, a cultural organization, to design an expansion of the foyer and offices within the Oosterpoort Concert Hall complex in Groningen. This new construction aims to reduce noise pollution to the surrounding area, optimize the use of available space, and be fully circular in its implementation.

Maximizing Space within the Same Area
Through the redesign, we have created more space for offices and an expanded foyer within the existing area. The new spatial organization allows for clustering of offices on the first floor. On the ground floor, the renovated foyer and patio provide a pleasant indoor space that promotes visual connectivity and overview. The glass facade allows natural light to penetrate deep into the building. While the design aligns with the original architectural language of the structure, the spatial reorganization and office clustering enhance the functionality, quality, and spaciousness of both the foyer and offices. The temporary, circular expansion of the cultural concert hall seamlessly integrates into the existing space, thanks to clear zoning and intelligent space utilization.
Enhanced Visibility, Reduced Noise
The revamped foyer and patio, along with the new offices, act as a sound buffer. With the enlarged foyer, guests no longer need to step outside during breaks or after performances. The office volume on the upper floor offers views of both the patio and the foyer, effectively minimizing noise transmission to the surrounding area. This noise reduction initiative by SPOT demonstrates their commitment to the local community. Additionally, the glass facade connecting the courtyard with the foyer creates a diverse space filled with natural daylight.
The spatial reorganization allows for office clustering on the first floor, leaving ample room on the ground floor for an attractive and well-organized foyer. The combined effect of the renovated foyer, patio, and offices acts as a noise buffer towards the exterior, eliminating the need for guests to go outside during breaks or after performances. Consequently, noise disturbance to the surroundings is significantly minimized.

Clear Zoning for Improved Functionality
The new offices feature a functional zoning layout that progresses from busy to secluded areas, creating a sense of flow. The layout includes a circulation zone, an area with office greenery and informal meeting spaces, and a flexible workspace zone. The office volume offers scenic views of the patio and foyer. Its layout ensures a smooth transition from bustling and interactive spaces to quieter and more secluded areas.
Circularity and Demountability
Given the limited lifespan of the Oosterpoort building, we opted for a fully circular materialization and easily demountable construction. This choice not only establishes a connection with both the past and the future but also pays homage to the former Zuiderpark that once occupied this site. The temporary expansion boasts a high-quality appearance, blending harmoniously with the surroundings.

Prioritizing Quality
The expansion was prompted by the client's desire to reduce noise pollution to the surrounding area. As a gesture towards the residents, the client aimed to minimize sound transmission through the facade and limit the noise generated by visitors during evening breaks. At the same time, it was already known that the complex would be demolished within a decade. Our design successfully convinced the client to opt for a solution that would provide visitors with a high-quality experience, even during the final years of the complex's existence.
Original Architectural Language with New Materialization
While the design harmonizes with the original architectural language and rhythm of the building, it stands out through its unique materialization. This approach creates a sense of unity and distinctiveness, enhancing the overall visitor experience. The aesthetic appeal is enduring, without concealing its temporary nature. The attractive and timeless appearance ensures a high-quality visitor experience, even during the complex's final years.

The design is circular and demountable, making it a perfect match for the temporary nature of the complex. In addition, we have opted for a high-quality appearance that offers visitors a pleasant experience.
